ABSTRACT
The MARS PATENT – a living fossil THE MARS PATENT is an interplanetarian project founded 1999 by Claudia Reiche and Helene von Oldenburg. It was the first and only exhibition space on Mars. The MARS PATENT invites to exhibit “whatever doesn’t fit on earth” on the Mars Exhibition Site or MES. In order to do this the MARS PATENT has a special device called the High Reality Machine or HRM_1.0n. Specific Conditions: THE MARS PATENT is a place for art and theory and sensible to its various concepts. THE MARS PATENT will exhibit projects, considering the special situation of the Mars Exhibition Site, e.g. geographic, geologic and metereologic aspects. THE MARS PATENT offers a suitable positioning for sculptures, internet relay chats, kinematic objects, art- and mediatheories, science fiction literature, videos, sound installations, manifestos, web-art etc. Remember, there are no walls on Mars! As a spot in-between worlds – in the internet and on Mars – www.mars-patent.org offered an alternative to in-effective, lavish space programs, asked for a gender based commitment (to exhibit on THE MARS PATENT one had to declare a female firstname) and accumulated a large range of site specific artwork, giving new meaning to the concept ’site specific’. THE MARS PATENT is more or less inactive since 2010, but is kept alive at www.mars-patent.org.
