ABSTRACT
This paper explores transdisciplinary connections between media art and science by focusing on the diagrams presented in Richard Feynman’s 1979 Fits of Reflection and Transmission – Quantum Behaviour Lecture . The diagrammatically enhanced lectures are used to explore various theoretical understandings of the quantum world, revealing new probabilities and multifarious potentialities that insert different realities into the physical world. The different realities will be compared with Gilles Deleuze writing on Francis Bacon’s diagrams are revealed in the book ‘The Logic of Sensation’. The paper explores the specific effect of the quantum diagram at the intersection between media art and science by revealing how an extension of Feynman’s diagram can demonstrate how objects can reappear in parallel existences. This research into the extension of Feynman’s diagram into the visual domain of an art work makes the phenomenon of invisibility visible and reveals the potential of Hugh Everett III’s ‘many worlds’ or parallel universes to exist. The trans-medial and trans-material speculative work ‘Atomism’ is an evolving collaborative art installation with Kevin Raxworthy that investigates silver, the mirror, and quantum theories of light. The research uses metaphorical mirrored surface of a screen to reveal that the quantum spin does not merely encode all the information about an object but is also independent of an observer.
