"Networked Art" Participants

ABSTRACT
GL1TCHYSTØRIES jonCates, Chair of the Film, Video, New Media & Animation. School of the Art Institute of Chicago GL1TCHYSTØRIES: Claims have been staked in the unstable ground of Glitch Art hystories. Can multiple and parallel Media Art Histories of Glitch Art co-exist openly or do these instabilities represent glitches in histories themselves? Glitch Art is a young art that has already become a popular form while still in an infancy, a sign of the rapid speed of incorporation of alternate theory-practices into more widely distributed media channels. Those making and writing on Glitch Art also respond quickly, incorporating and feeding back on to popularizations of glitches and glitching. Simultaneously, those from outside the nascent and inclusive Glitch Art community also make claims on glitch, such as James Bridle’s widely circulated claims of the existence of a “New Aesthetic”. Bridle proposes that his “New Aesthetic” includes Glitch Art as a subcategory and now the newness of Glitch is open to further debate in this context. My own work in developing this discourse now culminates in GL1TCH.US, an unstable book for an unstable art: HTTP://GL1TCH.US jonCates is the Chair of the Film, Video, New Media & Animation department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His projects are presented internationally in exhibitions and events in cities such as Aix-en-Provence, Berlin, Beijing, Boston, Cairo, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Linz, Los Angeles, Madrid, Mexico City, New York, Vienna and Warsaw as well as being widely available online. His research and writings appear online and in print publications from Gestalten, The Penn State University Press and Unsorted Books; and forthcoming publications from the MIT Press, Intellect Books and The Chicago University Press. In 2005 he created the concept of Dirty New Media, a culture of what is now often known as Glitch Art.
