ABSTRACT
Presence and Absence –The Body and the New Media This paper aims to have a look at some of the visual artists showing a particular interest in the interaction between the presence and the absence of the human body. Since the 60’s artists like Dan Graham and Bruce Nauman used the new video technology to exploit the theme of the presence of the body. Inherently, the usage of the technological environment of video capture has automatically resulted in a series of topics related to the presence of the body, but also to its absence. David Rockeby’s installations, based on surveillance cameras, and Sophie Calle’s artistic projects are two different directions of this topic, since each of these artists is using different instruments and artistic rhetoric, but ultimately both are speaking about the memory of the body. The possibilities of data transmission, but also the new computer technology, contributed in dealing with the issue of the rematerialization of the body, as it occurs in Paul Sermon’s installations. The new technical tools also lead to a cyber world, in which the artist is like a cyber master. Artists like Stelarc and Stahl Stenslie had given their own bodies as a point of departure to their cyber projects, where the initial body, seen as being obsolete, is carried in a prosthesis stance. Through its sophisticated installations, Charlotte Davies uses the virtual space to reconfigure the whole experience of being immersed into virtual reality. The internet environment adds new facets to all these approaches which are related to the issues of presence /absence. Besides the technical medium of most of the artistic projects, the vulnerability remains a key to interpret the human body. The individual body, the social body, the anonymous body, the artist’s body etc. are all but different facets of one approach.
