ABSTRACT
“Inventions at the Borders of History, Re-significance of Media Technologies From Latin America” proposes a framework to investigate forgotten paths of invention and early explorations of influential media technologies. This project operates as a retroactive manifesto of those technologies throughout Latin American history. It focuses on why and how some sonic, visual and computational technologies proposed in Latin America remained unknown to the mainstream. “Inventions at the Borders of History”, Re-significance of Media Technologies From Latin America” establishes a close dialog with the discourse of media history, media archaeology and the science and technology studies focusing on the process of invention exploring a re-signification of the technologies studied on the basis of a theoretical and experimental approach. It also means, as we will see, that this approach exceeds the theoretical, leading to experimental projects as well. “Re-significance of Media Technologies” establishes a close dialog between media history and media art practice these will serve as a backdrop to present specific study cases, making an emphasis on documentation and exposing methodologies that combine the historical research and studio based practice. “Inventions at the Borders of History, Re-significance of Media Technologies From Latin America” is an exploration of a territory conceptually similar to an archipelago where topics look relatively far away, the task to navigate the common waters is challenging and there are plenty of risks. However what this research proposes is that the islands (case studies) in the archipelago can be seen as instances of the same phenomena: Early processes of invention of media technologies.
