ABSTRACT
Acceleration of the observer caused the death of tectonics in architecture of the 20th century. The hybridization of video and architecture points to their possibly increased potential today, of channelling and modelling of social processes. The cubical skyscrapers of modernism could be re-designed as temporary screens (often according to the principle of interactivity): in the project by I. L. Galeta, Cinema for balconies, in Zagreb in 1979. Video, as compared with the other visual arts, has the practical advantage that it does not need exhibition environment, and can be projected onto the nude human body (in my text illustrated by Weekend Art – with T. Gotovac). D. Adjaye and O. Eliasson made a site-specific Your black Horizon, measuring local light on the island of Lopud. I would also mention Frameworks, installation at the Venice Biennale in 2004, which do not relate, but react to the context, taking the form of kinegrams. D. Maljkovic re-photographs socialist modernist buildings captured in O. Walles The Trial that, over years of political and economic transformation, become outmoded and dilapidated. I would like to mention and interpret the work of D. Martinis and S. Ivekovic – once being the part of Retro-avant-garde, and also new-Minimalism of I. Franke and G. Petercol. Marketing displays make a landscape of „seduction“ – Z. Kopljar in K9 Compassion, 2003, performs kneeling in front of them, or the act of adoration. The media are no longer understood as instruments for popularizing social culture; they are a new form of culture. Digital media give a new meaning to montage and narration, the semantic construction of an image. By organizing New tendencies (1961 – 1973), Zagreb in late modernism became one amid initiative platforms for new media art and theory.
