ABSTRACT
The Finnish Society of Bioart was founded in 2008 at the Kilpsijärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki in Lapland. It is an organization which fosters interdisciplinary work between art and science and enables joint projects between artists and scientists to develop new kind of scientific and artistic thinking and practice. The paper explores the notion of artistic fieldwork in comparison to scientific field work. This exploration will be supported via examples from the Ars Bioarctica art&science residency program which hosted around 25 artists and scientists since 2010 and the experiences from the Field_Notes events 2011 – “Cultivating Grounds” and 2013 “Deep Time”. Field_Notes is a week long field laboratory for theory and practice on art&science work at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station during which five working groups, each hosted by an expert together with a team of four, develop, test and evaluate specific artistic approaches based on the interplay of art&science. If we assume for the sake of convenience that the goal of science is to produce knowledge in the sense of a predictable world and the goal of art is to produce experience, what are commons and differences between scientific and artistic field work and what can each learn from the other ?
