ABSTRACT
This paper reports retrospectively on a technical case-study of Dumb Type’s performance “S/N” (1994-1996). This paper aims to introduce some techniques of the synchronization of audio, visuals and kinetics with early 90’s consumer electronics equipment in Dumb Type’s live performance. This paper is focused on a visual projection system. It was a hyblid system of analogue and digital equipments. It consists of 2 main parts. Multi screen video projectors with computer controlled VTRs. Slide projectors with computer controlled mirror system. In addition, this paper explores the changing style of video production for advanced systems to live performance, their design and construction, and their integration into the theatrical production process through the world tour. Through this study, we reveals some difference and commonality between the methods to make media arts of the 1990’s and today. The author was a member of Dumb Type from 1991 to 1999. Since 2000, he has been teaching in the field of media art at the School of Engineering in Chukyo University. The artist collective Dumb Type is based on Kyoto, Japan. Their work consists of not only live performance but also art installations, compact discs and videos. Often performances are translated into gallery installations. Many of dumb type’s art works have moved into the permanent collections of well‑known museums in New York, France, and Japan. http://dumbtype.com
