This paper looks at the past, present and future of holographic projection art as an emerging media practise. For over 5 years, Pepper’s Ghost has seen a renewed interest in contemporary art practises as a performance and live media platform. From interactive to generative audiovisual art, from sculptural to performative art – Peppers Ghost has proven a platform for media art production, an interface for multiple approaches in projection art. Holographic projection art has been presented from Hongkong to New York, from London to St. Petersburg at art festivals, in galleries and in an academic context. This paper looks at art practises using this new media platform as well as its history: From the early days of Dr. Pepper’s Ghost at the Polytechnic Institution London, to Cecil B. Hepworth cinematic approaches to the current wave of holographic projection art – from Stelarc, Analema Group or Birgitta Hosea
